The two-hour tasting itinerary suits a shorter visit; the three-hour bilingual tour includes the original-island entrance and requires at least two adults. One practical note that has nothing to do with which island you visit: the canals do not run late. Embarcadero service is 8:00 to 18:00, and night rides happen only by prior arrangement. A doll trip is a daylight activity, and the dolls are considerably creepier in flat afternoon light than they would be in the dark anyway.

The number keeps moving because visitors still bring dolls and hang them, and because the canal weather destroys them.

The discrepancy is not sloppiness, it is the nature of the place. Dolls rot. On timing: mornings are cooler, emptier and better for photographs, and the vendor boats have not arrived yet. Saturday afternoon is the full Xochimilco experience, mariachi, micheladas, boats rafting up alongside each other, which is wonderful and completely wrong for a doll island.
